For healthier and more productive chickens

Locally sourced chickens are slower-growing chickens that are given much more space in their coops. You can now find products made from locally sourced chickens in the butcher's shops of Colruyt Group stores (Colruyt lowest prices, Okay and Spar). You can recognise them by their distinctive yellow logo.

Domestic chickens are raised according to the various criteria of the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC): an international initiative of organisations striving for stricter animal welfare standards.
Domestic chickens live in barns with more daylight and 40% more space than before. In addition, farmers systematically provide daylight in the barns. There are also straw bales and perches are gradually being installed in the barns. This allows the chickens to relax more and encourages their natural behaviour.

For the vast majority of our home-grown chickens, we use the “NestBorn” technique: they are born in the barn. There, they have immediate access to water and feed, which has a positive effect on their gastrointestinal system. Another advantage is that the day-old chicks do not have to be transported from the hatchery to the barns, which reduces stress.

For the chickens raised in our country, we work with a cooperative of around 15 Belgian breeders, in partnership with a hatchery, a slaughterhouse and a regular customer, the Colruyt group. We want to work together in the long term for the welfare of the chickens.
