Lactation: period before weaning
Newborn piglets quickly run out of reserves. What’s more, they come into this world without any antibodies in the bloodstream. Having a swift intake of sufficient colostrum milk from the sow after farrowing is extremely important for survival and proper development. Sow colostrum milk is high in fat, protein and lactose, while also containing the antibodies necessary for building maternal immunity. Appropriate colostrum management during the first two days ensures that each piglet has enough colostrum milk available from the sow.
Sow milk: milk intended for piglets</h2>
After the first two days, if necessary, milk formula (milk designed for piglets) can be used to supplement the sow milk. The weaning period is a particularly dramatic one for piglets. They are separated from their mothers, moved to a different stall and are cut off from their mother’s milk, instead consuming solid feed containing plant-based ingredients. To prepare the piglets for this, supplementary feeding using piglet milk formula is introduced at an early stage in the farrowing pen.
Proxani offers a wide range of milk products to supplement sow milk: milk formula, creep feeds, pre-starters (with or without blood plasma) and weaning feeds for a smooth transition towards weaning.
