Farm overview

"I purchased an external farm in 2009", says Guy. "In 2010, Dirk joined the business and together we took over the parental farm. At that time, we were milking around 60 cows at both locations. After a few years, we rented a third location to house pregnant heifers, giving us room to increase cow numbers. In September 2015, we started building a new barn for the dairy herd, and in April 2016 we launched with 3 milking robots and 150 cows. In October 2017, a 4th robot was added, expanding the herd to around 250 dairy and dry cows. We terminated the third location after the new barn was completed, as we now house part of the youngstock in the old dairy barns together with the dry cows. Through continuous optimisation, we now achieve a 305‑day production of 11,000 kg with 4.14% fat and 3.54% protein."

Why did you install ProExpert?

When we began our collaboration with Proxani and robot specialist Sam Peeters in early 2025, monitoring through ProExpert was part of the agreement. With ProExpert, real‑time data from the milking robot was recorded and clearly visualised for both us and the specialist. Several robot settings were adjusted at the start of the cooperation based on these insights.

What were your expectations?

Our main expectation was to improve responsiveness. In the past, the robot data was underutilised, and settings — especially concentrate settings — were rarely adjusted.

What did you gain from it?

After critically reviewing the data with Sam, we identified bottlenecks and new opportunities. ProExpert provided better insight into our herd by generating trend lines for BSK and milk production per parity and lactation stage. Based on these insights, we adjusted the base ration and transition management, resulting in a 5‑point increase in BSK at herd level. The trend lines also enabled us to evaluate ration changes, such as silage switches, and to adjust when necessary.

Which actions did this lead to?

We significantly modified the concentrate tables and decided to feed less concentrate through the robot and more in the base ration. We also evaluated and adjusted the milking permission settings in consultation with the robot supplier, resulting in better distribution of milkings across the herd.

What do you hope to achieve in the future?

We aim to further increase lifetime production per cow by raising daily production and extending cow longevity. Because ProExpert analyses data almost in real time, we hope to adjust more quickly and evaluate improvements in the context of lactation and lactation stage.
